11/12/2009 Welcome to the latest edition of my e-mail newsletter! I’m busy preparing for my presentation at this Saturday’s SCBWI Prairie Writer’s Day in Palatine, but I thought I’d take a quick break to share some updates.
In this issue:
• National Day on Writing
• Author interview and book giveaway at www.TeachingAuthors.com
• Encouraging young writers
• Please help “spread the word”
National Day on Writing
Tuesday, October 20, was the National Day on Writing sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)--a special day set apart to celebrate all forms of writing. If you missed it, don’t worry; the celebration is still going on. NCTE has created a National Gallery of Writing, a digital archive of writing samples showing how and why Americans are writing every day. You can view the gallery at http://galleryofwriting.org/. I contributed to the gallery called “A Lifetime of Reading.” You can read my contribution at http://www.teachingauthors.com/2009/10/first-book-i-ever-owned.html . And to read all the National Day on Writing posts by the Teaching Authors, see http://www.teachingauthors.com/search/label/National%20Day%20on%20Writing .
Author Interview and book giveaway at www.TeachingAuthors.com
I’m especially pleased to announce that we are featuring a Guest Teaching Author Interview with Carolyn Marsden, award-winning author of over a dozen middle-grade novels with multicultural themes. As part of the interview, Carolyn shares a bit about how she works with collaborators on some of her projects, which I found quite intriguing. We are also offering a chance for readers to win an autographed copy of Carolyn’s newest book, Sahwira: An African Friendship. (Recommended for grades 5-8.) The direct link to the post is http://www.teachingauthors.com/2009/11/book-giveaway-and-guest-teaching-author.html . Entry deadline for the giveaway is Saturday, Nov. 14, 11 pm CST. I hope you’ll stop by.
Encouraging young writers
On November 6, I posted the first of a two-part series providing resources for encouraging young writers, including books and Internet resources. You can access both those posts directly at http://www.teachingauthors.com/search/label/Encouraging%20young%20writers. (Scroll down to read my post.)
Please help “spread the word”
I hope you will forward this email to anyone you know who may be interested. Also, please encourage others to subscribe at http://www.carmelamartino.com/newsletter.htm . I promise not to clutter your inbox—I don’t foresee sending this out more than once or twice a month. Of course, if you don’t find this newsletter helpful, or are feeling overwhelmed with email, you can always unsubscribe on the same webpage.
If you have any questions, for the quickest response, don’t reply to this email. Instead, email me directly.
I think that’s all for November, so I hope you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. And happy reading!
